About
Current Work
Making pots from her studio in Falmouth, Amanda uses local clay from St.Agnes in Cornwall and the pots are fired to a high stoneware temperature. Her current work is glazed with a subtle pale blue that is intended to represent the soothing tranquillity of Cornwall’s sea and sky. The base of the pots are often left unglazed showing the colour of the natural clay, which has a toasted warmth and sand like quality.
The ceramic journey
Amanda studied Studio Ceramics at Falmouth University and graduated in 2000. Shortly after gaining her degree she started work at Leach Pottery in St.Ives, Cornwall and began making pots in the original pottery with Trevor Corser and Joanna Wason.
“I have always been interested in the work of Bernard Leach and others working in this tradition, and as I started to learn skills and techniques that had been passed through the pottery for many years, my work began to resemble more and more characteristics of Leach pots. We used a similar clay body and some of the same glaze recipes that had been used in the pottery for over 80 years. I felt privileged to be working in such a historic place. It was an experience I look back on with delight, a most valued start to my career as a studio potter”.
Amanda still works at Leach Pottery, currently part time as a Learning and Participation Officer.
Since her first exhibition in 1999 at Falmouth Arts Centre, she has exhibited work at many shows and galleries in the UK and joining exhibitions in the United States and Japan. Amanda has also been a member of the Cornwall Crafts Association for 18 years.
